    Demand for accommodation services rose to record figures in 2017

    In 2017, accommodation establishments in Finland had a record number of nearly 22 million overnight stays, of which domestic tourists accounted for around 15.2 million and foreign tourists for good 6.7 million. The foreign demand for accommodation services grew by 16.8 per cent and the domestic demand by 4.1 per cent compared with the previous year. In all, total demand for accommodation services grew by 7.7 per cent in 2017.

    The net operating profit of investment service companies was EUR 63 million in the fourth quarter of 2017. EUR 22 million more operating profit was accumulated than in the corresponding quarter last year. Commission income increased by EUR 31 million to EUR 151 million.     In the fourth quarter of 2017, the net income from financial operations of credit institutions engaged in banking in Finland amounted to EUR 609 million and their operating profit was EUR 537 million. The net income from financial operations went up by EUR 37 million and the operating profit declined by EUR 235 million from one year ago. These data derive from Statistics Finlands financial statement statistics on credit institutions.

    One-half of households in Mainland Finland have a health care centre under two kilometres away from the dwelling measured along streets and roads. On average, the distance from home to a health care centre is 3.8 kilometres. The nearest pharmacy is at most 1.5 kilometres away for one-half of households. On average, the distance to a pharmacy is 3.4 kilometres. These data derive from the data of Statistics Finland's Household Budget Survey from 2016.

    Road traffic accidents claimed 13 lives in March

    According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 237 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in March. In them, 13 persons were killed and 320 persons injured. The number of persons killed was five lower and that of persons injured seven lower than in March 2017.

    According to Statistics Finland's Education Statistics, around 129,000 students attended education leading to a university of applied sciences degree and good 12,000 students education leading to a higher university of applied sciences degree. The number of university of applied sciences degrees completed was 23,500 and that of higher university of applied sciences degrees 2,800. The number of students attending education leading to a higher university of applied sciences degree grew by nearly 11 per cent and the number of degrees by around 10 per cent from the previous year. There were no great changes in the number of students and degrees in education leading to a university of applied sciences degree.

    In 2017, around 0.3 per cent of Finns aged 15 to 74 years had earned at least one-quarter of their income through various digital platforms during the previous 12 months. In numbers, this involves around 14,000 persons. A digital platform here refers to various online platforms through which a person can sell his or her work input or otherwise earn income. Data on persons working through platforms were collected for the first time in connection with Statistics Finlands Labour Force Survey in 2017.

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 1.6 per cent in March 2018 from one year back. The prices of materials went up by 2.4 per cent, those of services by 2.1 per cent and those of labour inputs by 0.6 per cent compared with March 2017.

    The year-on-year change in consumer prices calculated by Statistics Finland was 0.8 per cent in March. In February, inflation stood at 0.6 per cent. The slight increase in inflation from February to March was caused primarily by a rise in the price of food.

    Seasonally adjusted output fell 0.1 per cent in February 2018 from the month before. In February, working-day adjusted output was 2.4 per cent higher than one year before. Working-day adjusted output for January was revised upward by 1.3 percentage points to 2.2 per cent from January 2017.

    Retail trade sales grew by 3.3 per cent year-on-year in February

    According to Statistics Finland, sales in total trade increased by 3.5 per cent in February from February 2017. Sales in wholesale trade grew by 4.3 per cent and in retail trade by 3.3 per cent. Among retail trade industries, sales in daily consumer goods trade grew by 2.2 per cent and in department store trade by 3.6 per cent from one year back. Motor vehicle sales increased by 1.8 per cent compared to February 2017.

    Turnover in manufacturing increased by 6.5 per cent in November to January

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover in manufacturing in the November to January period was 6.5 per cent higher than in the corresponding period of the year before. Domestic sales grew by 4.3 per cent and export turnover by 8.1 per cent from one year ago.

    Wages and salaries sum grew by 3.7 per cent year-on-year in December to February

    According to Statistics Finlands data, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was 3.7 per cent greater in the December to February period than in the corresponding period twelve months earlier. In February, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy grew by 4.1 per cent from the year before. One year previously in December to February, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy increased by 2.4 per cent.

    Employment improved in 2017

    According to Statistics Finland's Labour Force Survey, the employment rate for the population aged 15 to 64 was 69.6 per cent in 2017. Mens employment rate was 70.7 per cent and womens 68.5 per cent. The employment rate of both men and women increased by 0.9 percentage points from 2016. These data derive from Statistics Finlands annual review Labour Force Survey 2017, time series data 2008 to 2017.
