    Vehicle stock grew in 2018

    At the end of 2018, the Finnish vehicle register contained 6,623,990 vehicles, of which 5,085,796 were in traffic use. The total number of registered vehicles grew by 2.3 per cent and the number of vehicles in traffic use grew by 0.8 per cent compared with the situation at the end of 2017. At the end of 2018, the vehicle register of the Åland Islands contained 48,566 vehicles. These data, compiled by Statistics Finland, are based on the traffic affairs register of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) and the vehicle register of Ålands Fordonsmyndigheten.

    Volume of goods transported by lorries decreased in the last quarter of 2018

    A total of 66 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries in the fourth quarter of 2018, which was 16 per cent less than in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The volume of transported soil materials decreased by 30 per cent and the volume of transport for other goods decreased by six per cent compared to the fourth quarter in 2017.     Road traffic accidents claimed 14 lives in February

    According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 225 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in February. In them, 14 persons were killed and 305 persons injured. The number of persons killed was six higher and that of persons injured four lower than in February 2018. The data were compared with the previous year's preliminary data.

    Building costs rose by 1.8 per cent in February year-on-year

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 1.8 per cent in February 2019 from one year back. The prices of materials went up by 2.4 per cent, those of labour inputs by 1.4 per cent and those of services by 0.8 per cent compared with February 2018.

    The current account was in deficit in the fourth quarter of 2018. The value of goods exports in balance of payments terms increased by five per cent and the value of service exports by five per cent. The net exports of goods and services remained in deficit as imports grew more strongly than exports. The deficit of the current account was curbed by positivity of the primary income account.     In the fourth quarter of 2018, general government's consolidated total revenue grew by EUR 0.2 billion compared with the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Consolidated total expenditure increased by EUR 0.8 billion from the previous years corresponding quarter. The difference between revenue and expenditure, that is, the net borrowing of general government rose by EUR 0.6 billion. Total revenue decreased by 0.3 per cent from the previous quarter. Total expenditure declined by 0.5 per cent from the previous quarter. In the fourth quarter of 2018, the general government deficit (net borrowing) stood at EUR 3.3 billion. General government is comprised of central government, local government and social security funds.

    General government debt grew by EUR 1.8 billion in the last quarter of 2018

    General government EDP debt, or consolidated gross debt at nominal prices amounted to EUR 137.5 billion at the end of the fourth quarter of 2018 and grew by EUR 1.8 billion during the quarter. Correspondingly, general government debt has grown by EUR 0.3 billion compared with the respective period of the year before.     According to Statistics Finlands preliminary data, the volume of Finlands gross domestic product grew by 2.3 per cent in 2018. The growth rate became slightly revised from the data published at the end of February (was 2.2 per cent). The year 2018 was the third successive year when Finland's gross domestic product grew clearly. As a result of this growth, the volume of gross domestic product exceeded the top year 2008 prior to the financial crisis.

    In January 2019, working-day adjusted output was 1.5 per cent higher than one year before. Seasonally adjusted output fell by 0.2 per cent in January from the month before. According to revised data, working-day adjusted output increased in December 2018 by 2.3 per cent (was 2.7) from December 2017.

    Service imports grew by 15 per cent in the last quarter of 2018 compared with the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Service exports grew by five per cent. The value of service imports was EUR 8.6 billion and that of exports EUR 7.9 billion. Other business services were imported most. Their imports also grew more than of any other service item. Exports grew most for the biggest export item of service exports, telecommunications, computer and information services.     Households saving rate grew in October to December from the previous quarter. The saving rate remained positive, because disposable income was bigger than consumption expenditure. Households investment rate remained on level with the previous quarter. The profit share of the non-financial corporations sector grew as value added in the sector grew more than compensation of employees. The investment rate of the non-financial corporations sector also grew slightly. These data derive from Statistics Finlands quarterly sector accounts.

    Discontinuation of education leading to a qualification or degree remained in the academic year 2016/2017 almost on level with the previous academic year. In all, 5.1 per cent of students discontinued their studies and did not resume them in any education leading to a qualification or degree. In upper secondary general education aimed at young people the discontinuation percentage was 3.1, in vocational education aimed at young people it was 7.4, in university of applied sciences education (university of applied sciences qualifications) 7.3 and in university education (lower and higher university degrees) 5.9 per cent. These data derive from Statistics Finlands Education Statistics.

    Inflation 1.3 per cent in February

    The year-on-year change in consumer prices calculated by Statistics Finland was 1.3 per cent in February. In January, inflation stood at 1.1 per cent. The slight increase in inflation was caused by a rise in electricity prices, for example.
