    Unemployment rate 8.8 per cent in January

    According to Statistics Finlands Labour Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons in January 2018 was 238,000, which was 4,000 fewer than one year ago. The unemployment rate was 8.8 per cent, having been 9.2 per cent in January of the year before. There were 71,000 more employed than in January of the previous year. The number of persons in the inactive population was 51,000 lower than one year earlier.

    Inflation 0.8 per cent in January

    The year-on-year change in consumer prices calculated by Statistics Finland was 0.8 per cent in January. In December, inflation stood at 0.5 per cent. Statistics Finland has updated the commodity basket for the consumer price index and the weight structure of consumption at the beginning of January. For example, music streaming services were added to the commodity basket and landline telephone call charges and video camera were removed due to low consumption.

    More open job vacancies in the last quarter of 2017 than one year earlier

    The number of open job vacancies was 37,200 in the last quarter of 2017, while the figure was 26,400 one year before. The data appear from Statistics Finlands Job Vacancy Survey and describe the situation on the first of December. In the whole of 2017, there were 41,600 open job vacancies, on average, which is 22 per cent more than in the previous year (33,900).

    Most common hourly earnings of wage and salary earners EUR 15 in 2016

    According to Statistics Finlands Structure of Earnings statistics, wage and salary earners most common total earnings per hour worked were EUR 15 in 2016. In addition to basic pay and scheduled pay, total hourly earnings include all bonuses, overtime pay and benefits in kind. Total earnings are in gross, that is, taxes or other payments have not been deducted from them.

    According to Statistics Finland's employment statistics, 27 per cent of the population aged 18 to 24 living in Kymenlaakso were outside work and education 1) at the end of 2016.     According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data for 2017, Finland's population was 5,516,224 at the end of the year. During 2017, our country's population grew by 12,927 persons, which is 3,062 persons fewer than in 2016.

    Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland up by 10.4 per cent in December 2017

    Nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments continued to grow, by 10.4 per cent from last year and 724,000 nights were recorded for them in December 2017. The number of nights spent by resident tourists went up by 8.6 per cent and totalled good 941,000. A total of nearly 1.7 million overnight stays were recorded at Finnish accommodation establishments in December 2017, which was 9.4 per cent more than in one year before. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finlands statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

    Road traffic accidents claimed 18 lives in January

    According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 297 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in January. In them, 18 persons were killed and 379 persons injured. The number of persons killed was eight higher and that of persons injured 51 lower than in January 2017.

    Output of the national economy shows no sign of slowing down in December

    Adjusted for working days, output was 3.6 per cent higher in December than one year before. According to revised data, working-day adjusted output increased in November 2017 by 4.3 per cent (previously 3.5 per cent) from November 2016. For this reason, seasonally adjusted output fell by 0.1 per cent in December 2017 from the month before.

    Retail trade sales grew by 2.6 per cent year-on-year in December

    According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales increased by 2.6 per cent in December from December 2016. Among retail trade industries, sales of daily consumer goods grew by 2.1 per cent and sales in department store trade by 5.7 per cent. Sales in wholesale trade grew in December by 1.5 per cent from twelve months earlier. By contrast, sales in motor vehicle trade decreased by 2.3 per cent over the same period. Sales increased in total trade by 1.5 per cent from December 2016.

    Turnover in manufacturing increased by good 7 per cent in September to November

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover in manufacturing in the September to November period was 7.3 per cent higher than in the corresponding period of the year before. Domestic sales grew by 6.0 per cent and export turnover by 8.4 per cent from one year ago.

    According to Statistics Finlands register of providers of education and register of educational institutions, there were 728 active providers of education and 3,315 educational institutions in which 1.85 million students pursued studies at the end of 2017. A total of 2,276 comprehensive schools were in operation, 19 per cent of which were joint schools comprising grades 1 to 9. The share of joint schools in comprehensive schools has risen by 10 percentage points in ten years.

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover in service industries grew by 6.8 per cent in September to November from the corresponding period of the year before. Among the industries, strongest growth was recorded in administrative and support service activities (+12.2%) and in the biggest of service industries, transportation and storage (+8.0%). Professional, scientific and technical activities and accommodation and food service activities also reached a good growth compared to one year ago. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.
