    Decrease in birth rate still continues

    According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population at the end of the year was 5,527,573. During 2019 Finland's population increased by 7,568 persons. The reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 17,903 higher than that of emigrants. The number of births was 7,962 lower than that of deaths. The preliminary total fertility rate was the lowest in the measuring history, 1.35.

    Employment of recent graduates continued to increase

    According to Statistics Finland's education statistics, employment of recent graduates improved further. University graduates were most successful in gaining employment, close on 90 per cent of them were working at the end of 2018. Altogether 69 per cent of attainers of basic vocational education qualifications, 84 per cent of attainers of vocational qualifications and 95 per cent of attainers of specialist vocational qualifications were employed.

    According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings rose by nearly one fourth in the third quarter of 2019 from the respective quarter of 2018. The number of enterprise closures fell by six per cent in the second quarter of 2019 from one year earlier.

    According to Statistics Finlands retail trade flash estimate, the working day adjusted turnover of retail trade increased by 0,4 per cent in December from December 2018. The volume of retail trade sales, from which the impact of price changes has been eliminated, decreased by 1.7 per cent over the same period. In daily consumer goods trade, the working day adjusted turnover increased by 2.3 per cent in December and the sales volume, in turn, by 0,2 per cent from the corresponding period of the previous year.

    Road traffic accidents claimed 11 lives in December

    According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 303 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in December. In them, 11 persons were killed and 401 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 14 lower and that of persons injured 19 higher than in December 2018. The data were compared with the previous year's preliminary data.

    Cubic volume of granted building permits increased in November

    According to Statistics Finland, in September to November 2019, building permits were granted for a total of 9.5 million cubic metres, which was 5.9 per cent more than one year ago. The cubic volume grew most in public service buildings, where 47.8 per cent more building permits were granted than one year earlier. The cubic volume covered by permits granted for commercial and office buildings also rose significantly, by 39.4 per cent. The cubic volume granted for residential buildings fell from one year back.

    Number of offences against property on the rise

    According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, a total of 447,400 offences against the Criminal Code were recorded by the police, customs and border guard in the course of 2019, which is 3,900 cases (one per cent) more than in 2018. A total of 213,200 offences against property were recorded, which is three per cent more than in the year before. Altogether 4.5 per cent more rapes were reported than one year previously.

    Building costs rose by 0.2 per cent in December year-on-year

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 0.2 per cent in December 2019 from one year back. Labour costs rose by 1.1 per cent and the prices of services by 0.9 per cent compared with December of the previous year. The prices of materials fell by 0.5 per cent from one year ago.

    Output of the national economy grew in November

    Adjusted for working days, output went up by 2.3 per cent in November 2019 year-on-year. In November, seasonally adjusted output grew by 0.3 per cent from the month before. According to revised data, working-day adjusted output increased in October 2019 by 1.9 per cent (previously 1.5 per cent) from October 2018.

    Turnover in manufacturing grew by 0.4 per cent in November

    According to Statistics Finland, working day adjusted turnover in manufacturing (TOL BCD) increased in November by 0.4 per cent year-on-year. Among the main manufacturing industries, most growth was recorded in the turnover of the electronic and electrical industry, up by 25.5 per cent from the year before. Of the main industries, turnover declined most in the forest industry, by 9.2 per cent from one year earlier. Seasonally adjusted turnover in manufacturing (TOL BCD) grew by 1.2 per cent compared with October.

    Turnover in trade grew by 0.5 per cent in November

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover in total trade adjusted for working days increased by 0.5 per cent in November from November 2018. Over the same time period, the working day adjusted volume of sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, increased by 1.2 per cent. Both turnover and sales volume grew in all trade industries except for wholesale trade.

    Inflation 0.9 per cent in December

    The year-on-year change in consumer prices calculated by Statistics Finland was 0.9 per cent in December. In November inflation stood at 0.7 per cent. The increase in inflation was caused by higher prices of electricity, for example. In 2019, the average inflation rate was 1.0 per cent.

    Turnover and output in services grew in November

    Working day adjusted turnover in service industries grew by 2.8 per cent in November 2019 from November 2018. Service output or volume, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, grew by 2.2 per cent over the same period. In this year's October, turnover reached a growth of 4.2 per cent, while volume went up by 3.0 per cent from one year back. The postal strike and its support strikes of over two weeks duration in November caused exceptional development in some of the industries. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

    Turnover of construction enterprises grew by 4.2 per cent in November
    13 Jan 2020 at 10:00pm
    Adjusted for working days, turnover of construction enterprises grew by 4.2 per cent from one year back in November. Measured by sales volume, the annual growth in construction was 0.8 per cent. Among the industries, development was weakest in civil engineering, where turnover clearly fell for the second consecutive month. Building construction developed most favourably with an annual growth of 7.4 per cent.
