    Building costs rose by 0.3 per cent in November year-on-year

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 0.3 per cent in November 2019 from one year back. The prices of services rose by 1.2 per cent and labour costs by 0.9 per cent compared with November of the previous year. The prices of materials fell by 0.4 per cent from one year ago.

    The current account was in surplus in the third quarter of 2019. The value of goods exports in balance of payments terms remained on level with the corresponding quarter of last year. Service exports grew strongly, which resulted in the service account turning to surplus. The primary income account was also in surplus. The net international investment position strengthened. The data appear from Statistics Finland's statistics on balance of payments and international investment position.

    Service exports grew by 17 per cent in the third quarter of 2019 compared to the corresponding quarter last year. Service imports grew by five per cent. Service exports were especially boosted by an increase in the export of ICT services. Correspondingly, in imports, the biggest growth measured in euros came from other business services, while measured in relative terms, financial services grew most. Growth in imports was also supported by ICT services. The data appear from Statistics Finland's statistics on international trade in goods and services, which are part of balance of payments .

    Adjusted for working days, output went up by 1.5 per cent in October 2019 from one year back. Seasonally adjusted output in turn fell by 0.6 per cent from the month before. According to revised data, working-day adjusted output increased in September 2019 by 2.1 per cent (previously 0.8 per cent) from last year's September.

    According to Statistics Finlands data, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was 3.2 per cent greater in the August to October period than in the corresponding period twelve months earlier. In October, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy grew by 3.5 per cent from the year before. One year previously in August to October, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy increased by 4.4 per cent.

    Turnover and output in services grew in October

    Working day adjusted turnover in service industries grew by 3.3 per cent in October 2019 from October 2018. Service output or volume, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, grew by 2.2 per cent over the same period. In this year's September, turnover reached a growth of 5.6 per cent, while volume went up by 4.3 per cent from one year back. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

    Turnover in manufacturing decreased by 2.4 per cent in October

    According to Statistics Finland, working day adjusted turnover in manufacturing (TOL BCD) decreased in October by 2.4 per cent year-on-year. Among the main manufacturing industries, the decline in working day adjusted turnover was strongest in the forest industry, 10.2 per cent and the chemical industry, 4.4 per cent from the year before. Seasonally adjusted turnover in manufacturing (TOL BCD) fell by 3.3 per cent compared with September.

    According to Statistics Finland's education statistics, clearly less further vocational education and labour market training not leading to a qualification was arranged in educational institutions in 2018 than in 2017. The number of participants especially decreased in further vocational education carried out as apprenticeship training, by 62 per cent and the number of teaching hours declined by 76 per cent.

    Greenhouse gas emissions went up by two per cent

    According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, the total emissions of greenhouse gases in 2018 correspond with 56.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2 eq.), being 14.9 million tonnes less than in the comparison year 1990. Emissions grew by two per cent from the previous year. The growth in emissions was most affected by increased consumption of natural gas and peat. Emissions not included in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) remained at last years level and were 0.3 million tonnes above the emission allocations set by the EU. The data are based on the preliminary report to be submitted by Statistics Finland to the European Commission by 15 January 2020 concerning emissions in 2018.

    According to Statistics Finlands input-output statistics, the share of compensation of employees in production value was highest in repair and installation of machinery and equipment of all manufacturing industries in 2015. In total, 45.8 per cent of the production value of the industry was made up of compensation of employees, i.e. wages and salaries and employers social security contributions, when direct and indirect compensation of employees used in the production are taken into account. Oil refining had the lowest share of compensation of employees of output, 10.8 per cent. The share of import inputs was highest in the same industry, 72.1 per cent.

    According to Statistics Finland's education statistics, 70 per cent of those who completed the matriculation examination in the spring semester in 2018 did not continue studies leading to a qualification or degree in the year of the matriculation examination. Ten per cent of them continued in university of applied sciences education and 18 per cent in university education. The share of those left outside further studies among new passers of the matriculation examination has grown for over 10 years. Eighty-two per cent of passers of the matriculation examination applied for further studies. Of completers of comprehensive school, 53 per cent immediately continued in upper secondary general education after comprehensive school and 41 per cent in vocational education.

    Turnover in trade grew slightly by 0.3 per cent in October

    According to Statistics Finland, turnover in total trade adjusted for working days grew by 0.3 per cent in October 2019 compared to October 2018. Over the same time period, the working day adjusted volume of sales, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, increased by 1.5 per cent. The contraction in wholesale trade weakened the development of both turnover and sales volume in October. Turnover and sales volume in retail trade and motor vehicle trade were still growing in October.

    Turnover of construction enterprises grew by 2.1 per cent in October

    Adjusted for working days, turnover of construction enterprises grew by 2.1 per cent from one year back in October. Measured by sales volume, however, turnover decreased by 1.2 per cent. Among the industries, growth occurred in building construction and in specialised construction, while the turnover in civil engineering clearly decreased.
