    The current account was in deficit in the second quarter of 2019. The value of goods exports in balance of payments terms remained on level with the corresponding quarter of last year. The primary income account was strongly in deficit. Growth in service exports was strong. The net international investment position strengthened. The data appear from Statistics Finland's statistics on balance of payments and international investment position.

    Gross domestic product grew by 1.7 per cent in 2018

    According to Statistics Finlands data, the volume of Finlands GDP grew by 1.7 per cent in 2018. Growth also amounted to 1.7 per cent in the previous calculation round in June. The entire national accounts time series has been updated starting from 1975. This does not have much effect on the annual volume changes in GDP but the revisions increase the level of value added, especially in the 2010s.

    Service exports grew by 13 per cent in the second quarter of 2019 compared with the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Service imports grew by seven per cent. Export of IT services grew strongly. In imports, especially other business services grew from the corresponding quarter last year. The data appear from Statistics Finland's statistics on international trade in goods and services, which are part of balance of payments .

    Net costs of municipalities social and health care activities grew in 2018

    The data of Statistics Finland's statistics on local government finances show that the net costs of municipalities operational economy amounted to EUR 31.4 billion in 2018. The change is especially affected by both the net costs of social and health care activities and of education and cultural activities being higher than in the year before. The net costs directed to social and health care activities increased by 2.9 per cent from 2017, totalling EUR 18.3 billion. The net costs of education and cultural activities grew by 3.9 per cent and amounted to EUR 11.0 billion. Data for the statistics were collected from all 311 municipalities and all 140 joint municipal authorities in Finland.

    Tax revenue grew by 2.1 per cent in 2018

    The accrual of taxes and compulsory social security contributions grew by 2.1 per cent in 2018. The total accrual amounted to EUR 99.0 billion. The tax ratio fell from the previous year by 0.8 percentage points to 42.2 per cent. The tax ratio describes the ratio of taxes and compulsory social security contributions to gross domestic product. These data are based on the preliminary data on national accounts for 2018.

    Road traffic accidents claimed 23 lives in August

    According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 422 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in August. In them, 23 persons were killed and 507 persons injured. The number of persons killed was two higher and that of persons injured 36 lower than in August 2018. The data were compared with the previous year's preliminary data.

    Volume of goods transported by lorries decreased in the second quarter of 2019

    A total of 57 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries during the second quarter of 2019, which was 12 per cent lower than in the corresponding period one year earlier. The volume of transported soil materials decreased by 33 per cent and the volume of transport of other goods increased by five per cent compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland.

    Building costs rose by 0.9 per cent in August year-on-year

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 0.9 per cent in August 2019 compared with the previous year. The prices of labour inputs increased by 1.6 per cent. The prices of materials rose by 0.5 per cent and those of services by 0.1 per cent compared with August of the previous year.

    The year-on-year change in consumer prices calculated by Statistics Finland was 1.1 per cent in August. In July inflation stood at 0.8 per cent. The increase in inflation was caused by higher prices of vegetables, for example.

    Number of persons receiving Finnish citizenship fell in 2018

    According to Statistics Finland, Finnish citizenship was granted in 2018 to 9,211 foreign citizens permanently resident in Finland. Altogether, 3,008 fewer Finnish citizenships were granted than in 2017. In relative terms, the number fell by 25 per cent from the previous year.

    Adjusted for working days, output went up by 1.7 per cent in July 2019 from one year back. Seasonally adjusted output in turn fell by 0.8 per cent from the month before. According to revised data, working-day adjusted output grew in June by 2.5 per cent (previously 2.2 per cent) from June 2018

    Working day adjusted turnover in service industries grew by 3.9 per cent in July 2019 from July 2018. Service output or volume, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, grew by 2.6 per cent over the same period. In this year's June, turnover reached a growth of 4.1 per cent, while volume went up by 2.5 per cent from one year back. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

    Turnover in manufacturing grew by 3.6 per cent in July

    According to Statistics Finland, working day adjusted turnover in manufacturing (TOL BCD) increased in July by 3.6 per cent year-on-year. Among the main manufacturing industries, growth in working day adjusted turnover was strongest in the electrical and electronics industry, 36.8 per cent. Seasonally adjusted turnover in manufacturing (TOL BCD) grew by 0.7 per cent compared with June.

    Wages and salaries sum grew by 3.7 per cent year-on-year in April to June

    According to Statistics Finlands data, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy was 3.7 per cent higher in the second quarter of 2019 compared with the previous year. In June, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy increased by 1.7 per cent from one year ago. A year ago in April to June, the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy grew by 4.8 per cent. Due to inadequate accumulation of data, no February to June data will be published for the public sector, so its impact has been eliminated from the development of the wages and salaries sum of the whole economy for February to June.
