    There were 63,100 open job vacancies in the first quarter of 2019, while the figure was 60,100 one year before. The share of part-time vacancies of all open vacancies decreased compared to the previous year. These data derive from Statistics Finland's statistics on open job vacancies and describe the situation on the first day of March.

    Foreigners more often suspects of offences than Finns

    According to Statistics Finland's data, 443,500 offences against the Criminal Code were recorded by the police, customs and border guard during 2018. There were 297,600 persons suspected of 273,600 solved offences against the Criminal Code of whom 34,200 were foreigners. According to age and gender standardised figures for 2017 and 2018, foreigners are suspected of offences 1.2 times more often than Finns.

    Road traffic accidents claimed 17 lives in April

    According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 278 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in April. In them, 17 persons were killed and 333 persons injured. The number of persons killed was the same and that of persons injured three higher than in April 2018. The data were compared with the previous year's preliminary data.

    Building costs rose by 1.7 per cent in April year-on-year

    According to Statistics Finland, building costs rose by 1.7 per cent in April 2019 year-on-year. The prices of materials went up by 2.0 per cent, those of labour inputs by 1.6 per cent and those of services by 0.9 per cent compared with April 2018.

    Adjusted for working days, output went up by 1.1 per cent in March 2019 from one year back. Seasonally adjusted output fell in March by 0.3 per cent from the month before. According to revised data, working day adjusted output grew in February 2019 by 2.5 per cent (previously 1.7 per cent) from February 2018.

    Turnover and output in services grew in March

    Working day adjusted turnover in service industries grew by 2.9 per cent in March 2019 from March 2018. Service output i.e. volume, from which the impact of prices has been eliminated, grew by 1.9 per cent over the same period. In February 2019, turnover reached a growth of 5.7 per cent, while volume then went up by 4.6 per cent from one year back. Services are here examined exclusive of trade.

    Turnover in manufacturing grew by 3.6 per cent in March

    According to Statistics Finland, working day adjusted turnover in manufacturing (TOL BCD) increased in March by 3.6 per cent from the corresponding period of the previous year. Among the main manufacturing industries, the growth in working day adjusted turnover was strongest in the chemical industry, 13.1 per cent and in the forest industry, 6.0 per cent. Seasonally adjusted turnover in manufacturing (TOL BCD) remained almost unchanged in March, growth from February only 0.1 per cent.

    Inflation 1.5 per cent in April

    The year-on-year change in consumer prices calculated by Statistics Finland was 1.5 per cent in April. In March, inflation stood at 1.1 per cent. The increase in inflation was caused by a rise in petrol prices, for example.

    Construction of the 1970s and 1980s is emphasised in Finnish dwellings. According to Statistics Finland, almost one-fifth of household-dwelling units reside in dwellings completed in the 1970s. One-half of household-dwelling units live in dwellings completed after 1980. Every tenth household-dwelling unit resides in dwellings completed in the current decade.

    Turnover and sales volume in construction increased in March

    In March 2019, the working day adjusted turnover of construction enterprises increased by 9.0 per cent and sales volume by 3.9 per cent year-on-year. Among the industries, development was most favourable both in terms of turnover and sales volume in civil engineering.

    Turnover of trade grew by 0.8 per cent in March

    According to Statistics Finland, the working day adjusted turnover of total trade grew by 0.8 per cent in March compared to March 2018. The development of turnover was weakened by the contraction in motor vehicle trade, whereas turnover in other trade industries increased from one year ago. The working day adjusted sales volume of total trade, from which the impact of price changes has been eliminated, decreased by 0.9 per cent in March. The weaker development of sales volume than turnover particularly in wholesale trade and daily consumer goods trade is due to a rise in prices.

    Industrial output fell in March both year-on - year and from the month before

    Seasonally adjusted industrial output (TOL BCD) fell by 0.1 per cent in March from the month before. According to Statistics Finland, industrial output adjusted for working days was 1.3 per cent lower in March 2019 than in March 2018. In the first quarter of the year, working-day adjusted output was 0.4 per cent greater than one year earlier.

    New orders in manufacturing grew by 2.6 per cent year-on-year in March

    According to Statistics Finland, the value of new orders in manufacturing was 2.6 per cent higher in March 2019 than twelve months earlier. During January to March, orders grew by 2.5 per cent from the year before. Orders have grown continuously for four months.

    Current expenditure on education has decreased in real terms since 2010

    Current expenditure on education decreased by 2.3 per cent in real terms in 2017 compared to the previous year. Current expenditure on education and current expenditure per student have decreased in real terms since 2010. Between 2000 and 2017, total current expenditure on education and current expenditure per student were in real terms highest in 2010.
