    Sea transport decreased in May

    The goods volume of foreign sea transport was in total 8.5 million tonnes in May 2020. Sea transport decreased by five per cent from last year's May. Exports decreased by 14 per cent and were 4.3 million tonnes. Import volume increased by six per cent and amounted to 4.2 million tonnes.

    The goods volume in domestic waterborne traffic totalled 563,540 tonnes in May 2020. Transport in domestic waterborne traffic decreased by 40 per cent compared to last year's May. In May 2020 almost all domestic water transport took place in coastal waterways.

    In June 2020 a total of 16,205 new motor vehicles were registered, of which 9,146 were automobiles. First registrations decreased by 11.0 per cent from the corresponding month of the previous year. In June the number of new passenger cars registered was 8,023, which was 23.9 per cent down from the year before. The share of new diesel-driven passenger cars was 16.7 per cent. These data are based on the Traffic Affairs Register of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) and they have been produced by Statistics Finland. The numbers are exclusive of the vehicles on the Åland Islands.

    Value of industrial output EUR 93 billion in 2019

    According to Statistics Finland's statistics on industrial output, the value of the sold output of industry (branches B: Mining and quarrying and C: Manufacturing) amounted to EUR 93.0 billion in 2019. The value of the sold output of industry grew by one per cent from the previous year.

    In the first quarter of 2020, a total of 17.7 million passengers travelled on Finnish railways, which is 21 per cent fewer than in the corresponding quarter of last year. The number of passenger kilometres in train traffic totalled 1,098 million. Passenger kilometres went down by six per cent from the corresponding quarter of the year before. Passenger kilometres indicate that the number of passengers decreased more in local transport than in long-distance transport.

    According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, prices of old dwellings in housing companies rose by 1.4 per cent in Greater Helsinki compared to May 2019 and decreased by 3.5 per cent in the rest of Finland. Compared to April, prices remained nearly unchanged in the whole country. Based on transactions made through real estate agents, around 30 per cent fewer transactions of old dwellings in housing companies were made in May compared with the corresponding period last year.

    Total energy consumption fell by 11 per cent in January to March

    According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, total energy consumption in January to March amounted to 344 petajoule (PJ), which was 11 per cent less than in the corresponding period last year. Electricity consumption amounted to 23 terawatt hours (TWh), or nine per cent lower than one year earlier. Carbon dioxide emissions from the energy use of fuels declined by 15 per cent year-on-year.

    According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, the seasonally adjusted turnover of large enterprises grew by 1.1 per cent in May 2020 compared with April. In April, seasonally adjusted turnover fell by 8.4 per cent, while in March, turnover was 0.9 per cent lower than in the month before. The exceptional situation caused by coronavirus had an effect on the development of large enterprises.

    In June, the consumer confidence indicator (CCI) stood at -3.9, while in May it was -9.0 and in April -13.9. Last year in June, the CCI received the value -4.6. The long-term average for the CCI is -1.8. The data are based on Statistics Finlands Consumer Confidence Survey, to which 1,100 persons resident in Finland responded between 1 and 17 June.

    General government debt grew by EUR 12.3 billion in the first quarter of 2020

    General government EDP debt, i.e. consolidated gross debt at nominal prices amounted to EUR 154.7 billion at the end of the first quarter of 2020 and grew by EUR 12.3 billion during the quarter. Correspondingly, general government debt has grown by EUR 14.8 billion compared with the respective period of the year before. These data derive from Statistics Finland's statistics on general government debt by quarter.

    General governments net financial assets fell in the first quarter of 2020

    At the end of the first quarter of 2020, general government's net financial assets, i.e. the difference between assets and liabilities, amounted to EUR 122.4 billion. Net financial assets went down by EUR 29.6 billion from the previous quarter mostly due to negative return on financial investment of employment pension schemes and central government and growing central government debt. These data derive from general government financial accounts compiled by Statistics Finland.

    Households net financial assets decreased strongly in the first quarter of 2020

    Households financial assets declined by EUR 14.5 billion during the first quarter of 2020 falling to EUR 319.4 billion. In turn, households debts contracted by EUR 0.4 billion during the first quarter of 2020 deceasing to EUR 184.1 billion. As a result of these changes, households' net financial assets decreased by EUR 14.2 billion to EUR 135.3 billion. Net financial assets refer to the difference between financial assets and liabilities. These data derive from Statistics Finlands financial accounts statistics.

    Due to the market situation caused by the coronavirus, overnight stays by resident tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments declined by 74.4 per cent from last year and 0.28 million nights were recorded for them in May 2020. Overnight stays by foreign tourists declined by 95.7 per cent and 0.02 million overnight stays were recorded for non-resident tourists. Finnish accommodation establishments recorded a total of 0.3 million overnight stays, which was 80.7 per cent lower than one year before. 244 hotels were closed for the entire month and 39 part of the month during May. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finlands statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

    Number of passengers at Finnish airports decreased by 98 per cent in May 2020

    Altogether 44,970 passengers flew through Finnish airports in May 2020, which was 98 per cent lower than one year before. There were 36,225 passengers at Helsinki Airport and a total of 8,745 passengers at other domestic airports. Helsinki Airport accounted for 81 per cent of all passengers at domestic airports.

    Retail trade flash estimate: turnover grew by 5.0 per cent year-on-year in May

    According to Statistics Finlands retail trade flash estimate, the working day adjusted turnover of retail trade increased by 5.0 per cent in May from May 2019. The volume of retail trade sales, from which the impact of price changes has been eliminated, increased by 4.7 per cent over the same period. In daily consumer goods trade, the working day adjusted turnover increased by 8.4 per cent in May and the sales volume, in turn, by 6.6 per cent from the corresponding period of the previous year. The exceptional situation caused by coronavirus had an effect on the development of both industries. The working adjusted development was strengthened by May Day falling on Friday and the number of weekends in May 2020 compared to May 2019.
