    According to Statistics Finland, 14.2 per cent fewer building permits were granted in February to April 2018 than in the corresponding period of one year earlier. The cubic volume decreased in all main categories of buildings from one year back. The cubic volume covered by permits granted for commercial and office buildings declined most, by 18.7 per cent. The cubic volume covered by permits for industrial and warehouse building and residential building construction also decreased significantly.

    In the first quarter of 2018, consolidated total general government revenue grew by EUR 0.9 billion from the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Consolidated total expenditure increased by EUR 0.5 billion from the previous years corresponding quarter. The difference between revenue and expenditure, that is, the financial position (net borrowing) of general government improved by EUR 0.4 billion. Total revenue decreased by 0.4 per cent from the previous quarter. Total expenditure grew by 2.1 per cent from the previous quarter. In the first quarter of 2018, the general government surplus (net lending) stood at EUR 0.2 billion. The financial position of general government has seen a trend-like improvement since 2015. General government is comprised of central government, local government and social security funds.

    According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population was 5,514,997 at the end of May. Our country's population increased by 1,867 persons during January-May. The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 5,578. The number of births was 3,711 lower than that of deaths.

    Statistics Finlands statistics on indebtedness show that the average size of a housing loan per household-dwelling unit with a housing loan was EUR 98,735 in 2017. Household-dwelling units with two supporters and children had most housing loans, EUR 133,350, on average. The average housing loan grew by close on one per cent year-on-year.     Households saving rate improved in January to March from the previous quarter. The saving rate improved because disposable income grew especially as a result of increased wage income and households consumption expenditure increased at a clearly more moderate rate than income. Households' investment rate continued growing. The profit share of the non-financial corporations sector improved compared to the previous quarter as the sector's value added grew more than paid compensation of employees.     According to Statistics Finland, the average age of second generation immigrants with foreign background was very low, 10.9 years, in 2017. The average age was the same 10.9 years for both girls and boys. Second generation immigrants with foreign background, i.e. those born in Finland, are still mostly very young. Of them, 84 per cent were underage and nearly one-half were under school-age in 2017.

The volume of transported soil materials increased by 9 per cent and the volume of transport for other goods grew by 15 per cent compared to the corresponding quarter of the year before.     Service exports continued growing in the first quarter of 2018, up by two per cent year-on-year. In particular, transport services, manufacturing services and other business services increased. Travel to Finland also grew. However, the growth of service exports has evened out, as service exports went down for ICT services and charges for the use of intellectual property n.i.e. Sweden was the most significant country of exports for Finland in both goods and services.     Risk of fatal accidents at work among own-account workers in agriculture has grown by 11.2 per cent between 2007 and 2016. These data derive from Statistics Finland's occupational accidents statistics, in which two five-year periods were compared with each other. In the 2007 to 2011 period, own-account workers in agriculture had 29 fatal accidents at work, which is an average of 7.0 fatal accidents per 100,000 own-account workers in agriculture. In the 2012 to 2016 period, own-account workers in agriculture had 27 fatal accidents at work, which is an average of 7.8 fatal accidents per 100,000 own-account workers in agriculture.     Seasonally adjusted output fell by 0.9 per cent in April 2018 from the month before. In April, working-day adjusted output was 1.8 per cent higher than one year before. According to revised data, working-day adjusted output grew in March 2018 by 4.0 per cent (previously 3.1 per cent) from March 2017. The fact that Easter occurred in April in 2017 affected the working day adjustment, which is visible as a large growth figure in March and rather weak growth in April.
